The Changeable Chair is a unique piece of furniture that emerged from the application of system design theory and a desire for indoor relaxation. The design, which is a harmonious blend of form and function, includes a chair and several small wooden boxes. These boxes, designed with specialized wood joints, can easily be attached to the chair, providing a convenient storage solution for everyday items.
What sets the Changeable Chair apart from other furniture designs is its versatility and the use of traditional wood joints. The chair is made from a 30mm standard wood board, and the use of CNC lathe technique and CNC routing makes the manufacturing process efficient and precise. The design team explored different shapes and patterns, evolving four pre-constructed wood boards into a complete unit.
The Changeable Chair measures 580mm in width, 600mm in depth, and 750mm in height. The project started in December 2015 in Zhengzhou and was completed in June 2016. It was exhibited in the Industrial Design Final Project Exhibition at Zhengzhou University of Light Industry.
The design of the Changeable Chair was inspired by the traditional use of wood joints in Chinese furniture design. Despite the challenges of material cost and stability, the design team was able to create a chair that can accommodate different weights. The result is a piece of furniture that is not only functional but also a testament to the designers' commitment to preserving and developing traditional design techniques.
The Changeable Chair was awarded the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations. This award is a testament to the designers' innovation and wisdom, and their contribution to advancing the fields of art, design, and technology.
